Dutch operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, has over twenty-five years of experience in adventure cruises and has crafted these carefully throughout the years. By becoming experts in the areas that they travel to, they are able to constantly evolve the tours that they provide and continually offer expeditions that appeal to the explorer inside us all.
Over this time they have also become very adept at creating routes which enable travellers to get up close and personal with many of the exotic species that inhabit these unfrequented lands. You will constantly be on the lookout for beautiful wildlife as you are transported from familiar surroundings to those that very few people will ever get to see.
And with trips that offer maximum time away from the ship, taking part in excursions, and minimal numbers aboard each vessel, there are few better ways to get the most from your journey into the unknown.
Their fleet of four ships is made up of two ice breaking vessels, Plancius and Ortelius, and two traditional sailing boats, Noorderlicht and Rembrandt van Rijn; meaning there are two different types of tours available. The icebreakers are perfect for taking passengers right into the heart of both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, cruising through pack-ice as they go, whilst the schooners are ideally suited to sailing between the islands in and around Greenland and the Svalbard Archipelago.
With specialist lecturers on-board to offer knowledge and insight regarding these vast lands, and a fleet of Zodiacs that are always ready to extend your ability to explore, you can enjoy the comfort of an intimate and friendly cruising experience, whilst taking in the stunning scenery which can be found in abundance.
If you’ve ever wanted to get as close as possible to some of the most exotic creatures on Earth and some of the most extreme terrains imaginable, then Oceanwide Expeditions can take you there. Climb aboard one of four ships that this Dutch adventure tourism operator has at their disposal and enjoy every moment of your journey into places that, for so many of us, only exist within our imagination. By designing the perfect route to suit each of the regions that they travel to, Oceanwide can offer an experience that is tailor-made to getting the most from your once in a lifetime adventure.
Accommodation is slightly limited aboard these vessels, but Oceanwide do stress that they are not made to be luxury ships. Comfort is still paramount though and cabins are spacious enough with all the facilities that you would need for a trip that involves plenty of activity away from the ship. Most vessels offer a choice of cabins depending on how many people are travelling in your party and there is also the option to have a porthole as well. Private bathroom facilities are found on-board all but one of the ships and there if amble storage space for all of your belongings.
Oceanwide have a partnership with travellunch in order to supply food that is quick and easy to prepare, has a long shelf life and is lightweight when transporting it to remote regions. The food on offer remains nutritious and well-varied though, with over 100 different options available including mains, deserts, snacks and drinks. All the ships have a restaurant area in which you can relax whilst refuelling for the next adventure and discussing the day’s events with your fellow passengers.
Aside from the cabins, there are a few public areas which you are free to use during your time aboard an Oceanwide expedition. These include restaurant and bar areas where you can relax and take in the refreshments available, lecture room in which you can listen to interesting and educational presentations from the knowledgeable guides and plenty of deck space to rush onto when you hear the call that whales have been spotted in the water or there’s a group of polar bears patrolling the ice.
Oceanwide offer expeditions to four main areas: Greenland, Spitsbergen, The Arctic and Antarctica. However there are a wide range of other locations that can be visited as part of these trips. From journeys to the North Atlantic islands of Lofoten and Bear island to sailings through the Weddell Sea and to the South Orkney Islands (link to this page in destinations), there are plenty of varies trips available which will showcase the most exciting and breath-taking parts of the Polar Regions.
During these expedition cruises there will be many chances to take part in a wide range of activities. Depending on where you are travelling, you could get the chance to go on a whale safari, do some kayaking, hike through the rugged terrains, take part in some polar diving with all the required equipment or try a bit of ski mountaineering. It’s important to point out that many of these activities will be subject to the unpredictable weather conditions but everything will always be done to try and make them available if it is safe to do so.
