Oceanwide Adds Third Ship For 2019

Oceanwide Expeditions have just started construction on what will be the third expedition ship to join their ranks. Due to enter service in early 2019, Hondius will accompany Ortelius and Plancius to create a triumvirate of polar vessels.

The name continues the traditional Oceanwide have established of christening their ships in the name of Dutch-Flemish cartographers. Jodocus Hondius was one of the first people to map the New World and Europe, whilst also being a contemporary of legendary explorer Francis Drake. The others in the fleet are named after Abraham Ortelius, who popularised the theory that the continents once existed as one giant land mass, and Petrus Plancius.

Hondius will be classified under the highest possible ice class, making it one of the strongest vessels to sail to the Arctic and Antarctica. She will feature a range of facilities such as zodiac gangways and lecture theatres, which will prove very useful for guests on polar cruises. There will also be a panorama lounge for soaking up the amazing views and an indoor platform to aid budding kayakers when heading out to explore coastal inlets. A comfortable night’s sleep is guaranteed by a range of different cabin grades, including balcony suites and quadruple cabins that are perfect for adventurers sailing in larger groups.

Various eco-friendly measures will be taken during the building and operation of Hondius to ensure the environmental impact is kept to a minimum. These range from power management that enables the lowest possible CO2 emissions to the use of LED lighting throughout the ship.

It is no surprise to see the number of polar vessels increasing as this type of cruising becomes more and more popular. This new addition will allow Oceanwide to offer a wider range of itineraries to the exciting destinations that can be found in these remote parts of the world.
