Get A Feel For The Falklands With Lindblad’s Circumnavigation
To many people, the Falklands are merely an archipelago which has been the backdrop for controversy and conflict in recent decades. However, for those who can look past this, the islands are home to spectacular scenery, fascinating wildlife and British nationals that live a vastly different life to most of us here in the UK.
Previously, the only way to visit during an expedition cruise has been to take in the major places, such as Stanley, during a tour that also includes visits to surrounding island groups and the Antarctic Peninsula. However, Lindblad Expeditions has announced their first ever circumnavigation of the Falklands, taking guests to parts which are seldom visited by polar cruise vessels. Falklands 360°, as the itinerary is being called, will take place on board National Geographic Orion and will last 13 days.
During the trip you will visit many of the Falkland Islands, with a great focus on the local wildlife. This includes spotting rockhopper penguins on Carcass Island, bull elephant seals on New Island and black-browed albatross on Steeple Jason. As well as this, there will also be the chance to interact with people that have made this remote outpost their home. Visits to Stanley and Fox Bay will allow the locals to introduce you to customs such as sheep shearing and life on a working ranch.
On your journey from the southern tip of Argentina to the Falklands, you will also have the chance to visit Isla de Los Estados or Staten Island, to give it its English name. This small piece of land is the newest nature preserve in the southern hemisphere and is home to Magellanic penguins, cormorants and deer. If the weather permits, you’ll also be able to explore the wild beech forest and reach the “lighthouse at the end of the world” which inspired Jules Verne’s 1905 novel.
There are two different sailings of this Falklands cruise, taking place on the 19th and 30th of October 2016. Whilst both will have a large focus on photography, guests choosing the earlier departure will have the opportunity to test out the latest gadgetry from New York photo/video megastore B&H.
