3 Things You’ll Notice When Camping On Antarctica

If you feel adventurous when camping in the British countryside, think how exhilarating it would be to do the same in the wilds of Antarctica. Many Antarctic cruises offer the chance to journey ashore during the evening and spend a night in the ultimate icy environment, under the stars. Once you have finished your evening meal, you will be escorted to a suitable site and set up camp there until the morning. Whilst your trip is sure to be full of amazing experiences, the opportunity to sleep on the seventh continent is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

If you do opt for the Antarctic camping excursion, here are a few things that you’re bound to notice.

An Eerie Silence

Penguin Antarctica

As you lie there, struggling to comprehend your surroundings, one thing will be even stranger than the environment in which you find yourself. In a world where we are constantly surrounded by the hustle and bustle of daily life, even at night, it’s very rare that silence fills the air around you. Here, though, there is very little to break the serene sound of nothing.

The occasional crack of an iceberg drifting off into the sea, water being expelled from a whale’s blowhole in the distance or a sequence of crunches followed by a splash as a clumsy penguin makes his way across the ice to the water; these alien noises will punctuate a night of quiet.

Everyone’s Welcome

Camping Antarctica

Even though places will be limited on most trips, you’ll notice that this activity is open to everyone and that no prior experience is needed. This is because you will be accompanied by a professional guide, who will also be on patrol throughout the night, and because all of the equipment you will need will be provided by the operator.

Where ‘open-air’ camping is offered, you will be given a bivouac bag which covers your sleeping bag during the night. This means you can feel even closer to the environment around you as you are not enclosed in a tent. If you would prefer, though, a tent will be provided for extra cover. You’ll also be given water and windproof sleeping bags, mattresses, a tent lantern and a field toilet. As long as you are happy to help set up camp and break it down again in the morning, everyone is welcome.

You Won’t Quite Believe Where You Are

As you slowly open your eyes in the morning, there will be a split-second when you totally forget where you are. This usually occurs when you stay at a friend’s house or in a hotel, but you will have never felt it like this before. Finally, you remember you have just spent the night on one of the world’s wildest landscapes and a smile will slowly cover your face. There will just be time to soak it all in once again, before you tidy up and ensure that everything you brought with you is returned back to the ship.
